Sunset is the instant the top edge of the sun slips below the horizon. That instant arrives at a different moment in every place on Earth, which is why searching for sunset today only really has an answer once your location is known. This page asks your browser for it, computes the time on your device, and shows tonight's sunset alongside the day length, the evening golden hour and the moon, so you can decide whether to grab a jacket, a camera or both.
How this page finds tonight's sunset
Tap Use my location and your browser will ask for permission. If you allow it, your device hands this page a latitude and longitude, and the sunset time is calculated right there in the page from those coordinates and today's date. The coordinates never leave your browser: there is no server call, no lookup service and no IP address geolocation, so the answer is both exact and private.

Why sunset is not at the same time for everyone today
Three things move sunset around. Longitude decides when your part of the planet rotates away from the sun, so inside a single time zone the eastern edge sees the sun go down noticeably earlier than the western edge, sometimes by well over an hour. Latitude decides how steeply the sun approaches the horizon and how long the day is: the further you live from the equator, the wider the swing between the summer and winter extremes. Then clock time is laid on top, because time zones are drawn as political shapes rather than neat lines of longitude, and daylight saving shifts the whole thing by an hour for part of the year.
Stack all three together and two towns in the same country, on the same evening, can have sunsets that are an hour apart on the clock. That is why a generic sunset time is not worth much, and why this page insists on knowing where you are before it answers.
Sunset moves a little every day
Sunset is never quite the same twice. Around the March and September equinoxes the change is at its fastest, and many places at middle latitudes gain or lose roughly two to three minutes of daylight per day. Around the June and December solstices the movement almost stops, which is where the word solstice comes from: the sun appears to stand still before turning back the other way.
Above the Arctic Circle and below the Antarctic Circle the pattern breaks entirely. For part of the year the sun does not set at all, and for part of it there is no sunrise. If that applies where you are, this page says so plainly rather than inventing a time.
Getting the most out of the last hour of light
The interesting light does not start at sunset, it starts before it. The evening golden hour is the stretch while the sun is still up but low, when the light turns warm and shadows stretch out, and it is shown above for your location. Once the sun is gone, the blue hour follows: a deep even blue that photographers use for skylines. Usable daylight finally ends at civil dusk, which is roughly twenty to forty minutes after sunset at middle latitudes and considerably later near the poles.
So if the answer above says the sun sets at, say, half past eight, the practical plan is to be in position around half past seven for the gold, and to expect to see your way home comfortably until about nine. Earth's axis is tilted, so the length of the day drifts through the year. Near the equinoxes in March and September, sunset can move by two to three minutes a day at middle latitudes; near the solstices in June and December it barely moves at all.
What is the difference between sunset and dusk?
Sunset is the single instant the sun's upper edge disappears below the horizon. Dusk is the fading twilight afterwards, and last light (civil dusk) is the moment usable daylight ends, typically twenty to forty minutes later.
