This morning, where you are

What time is sunrise today?

Sunrise has no single time: it depends entirely on where you are standing. Allow location access below, or pick your city, and this page works out today's sunrise from your own coordinates and shows it in your local time. Nothing is sent to a server.

Sunrise today, wherever you are

Sunrise is the instant the top edge of the sun first appears over the horizon. It happens at a different moment in every place on Earth, which is why searching for sunrise today only has a real answer once your location is known. This page asks your browser for it, computes the time on your device, and shows today's sunrise alongside the day length and the morning light, whether you are planning a run, a flight, a prayer time or a photograph.

How this page finds today's sunrise

Tap Use my location and your browser will ask for permission. If you allow it, your device hands this page a latitude and longitude, and the sunrise time is calculated right there in the page from those coordinates and today's date. The coordinates never leave your browser: there is no server call, no lookup service and no IP address geolocation, so the answer is both exact and private.

If you would rather not share your location, or your browser blocks it, nothing breaks. Pick any city from the list instead and you get the same calculation for that city's coordinates and time zone. Either way the arithmetic is the same, and it runs on your device.

Why sunrise is not at the same time for everyone today

Longitude decides when your part of the planet turns back into the sunlight, so inside a single time zone the eastern edge greets the sun well before the western edge, sometimes by more than an hour. Latitude decides how long the day is and how steeply the sun climbs, so the further you are from the equator, the wider the gap between your earliest summer sunrise and your latest winter one. On top of both sits clock time, because time zones follow borders rather than lines of longitude, and daylight saving moves everything by an hour for part of the year.

The result is that a generic sunrise time is close to meaningless. Two towns in the same country can wake to the sun an hour apart, which is why this page asks where you are before it answers.

Sunrise moves a little every day

Sunrise drifts all year. Around the March and September equinoxes it moves fastest, and many places at middle latitudes gain or lose roughly two to three minutes of daylight per day. Around the June and December solstices it nearly stalls, the sun rising at almost the same time for a week or more before turning back.

Above the Arctic Circle and below the Antarctic Circle the pattern breaks. For part of the year the sun never rises, and for part of it never sets. Where that applies, this page says so instead of inventing a time.

First light comes before sunrise

If you are getting up for the sun, sunrise is the wrong alarm. The sky starts to brighten well before the sun itself appears: civil dawn, also called first light, is the moment there is enough natural light to see and move around outdoors, typically twenty to forty minutes before sunrise at middle latitudes and much earlier near the poles.

Morning golden hour then runs from sunrise for a while afterwards, the warm low light that flatters almost everything. So the useful plan is to be outside at first light, ready by sunrise, and shooting or running through the golden hour that follows. Your city's page lists all of those moments for any date you choose.

Frequently asked questions

What time does the sun rise today?

It depends on your exact location, so allow location access above or pick your city and the page will show today's sunrise in your local time, computed from your coordinates for today's date.

How do I find the sunrise time for my exact location?

Use the Use my location button. Your browser asks permission, then hands the page your latitude and longitude and the sunrise time is calculated on your device from those coordinates. No account, no key and no location lookup service is involved.

Does this page track or store my location?

No. The coordinates stay inside your browser tab and are used only for the calculation on screen. They are not sent to a server, not logged and not stored, and the site does not use IP address geolocation as a fallback.

Is sunrise at the same time across my country?

Almost never. Within one time zone, places further east see the sun rise earlier, and places further north or south have different day lengths. Differences of an hour or more inside a single country are common.

Why does sunrise keep getting earlier or later?

Earth's axis is tilted, so day length drifts through the year. Near the equinoxes in March and September, sunrise can move by two to three minutes a day at middle latitudes; near the solstices in June and December it barely moves at all.

What is the difference between sunrise and dawn?

Dawn is the growing twilight before the sun appears; sunrise is the single instant the sun's upper edge clears the horizon. First light (civil dawn) is usually twenty to forty minutes before sunrise at middle latitudes.

How accurate are these sunrise times?

They are accurate to about a minute for a clear, flat horizon, using the open source SunCalc astronomy library. Hills, mountains and buildings can delay the moment you actually see the sun, so treat it as the astronomical sunrise rather than the moment your particular view lights up.

Data and methodology: every time on this page is computed from the coordinates you provide with SunCalc, an open source astronomy library, in your own browser. Nothing is looked up from a table and nothing is sent to a server.
